Evite.com has a cool drink calculator where you enter what you're serving, how long the party lasts, how many guests, and whether your guests are heavy or light drinkers. Check it out.

I think the general rule is to budget for around 2-3 drinks per person. Obviously some will drink that amount, others more, and some others less.
I was married last fall, and we had approx. 120 people with an open bar. The tab at the end of the night for booze alone was around $3000 (Canadian).

Does your insurance cover the "open bar" idea? Or you liable if someone drinks too much and then drives home?

Wouldn't serving wine with dinner be cheaper than an open bar? Or for that matter a Margarita Bar, Daiquiri Bar or something like that?
Are you doing the designated driver thing?

Good luck...

People always drink more than expected! And they drink a little more unusual at a wedding or reception, meaning just because your uncle drinks beer does not mean he won't be ordering 15 7/7's at the bar. Have more liquor than beer!

A 750 ml bottle has around 22-25 1 oz shots per bottle....depending on how heavy your pouring you could get around the same amount of drinks per each bottle

it depends on what you are serving

75 bottles of wine

or 50 bottles of wine and 10 bottles of hard liquor

40 bottles of wine 10 bottles of hard liquor 5 cases of beer ( or a keg)

40 bottles of wine 8 bottles of hard liquor 3 cases of wine coolers 5 cases of beer ( or a keg)

a lot of different things to choose from

Where are you buying from? If you buy from a liquor store, ask for their advise. Also ask if you can return any unused bottles, most will allow it.

Depends. Are you inviting "us" - me, groyzk, jimbo, bearded one, X&Y, etc - double it up, for each one.
