As far as THE lineal champ, which is 'the man that beat the man', Muhammed Ali was the champ until June of 1979 when he retired.

After that, the title was declared vacant until Larry Holmes won the distinction as lineal champ in October of 1980 when he beat Ali, who came out of retirement.

Its really as simple as that.

Depending on which organization you recognized, at least part of the time Larry Holmes, Muhammed Ali, and John Tate all held the title of World Champion in 1979.

Muhammad Ali/Larry Holmes. Ali had regained the championship from Leon Spinks and nearing retirement and Holmes won the other version of the championship by defeating Ken Norton.

ali was the champ, the only one that mattered. holmes had beaten norton, who was awarded the title, outside the ring(rubbish!), after ali retired. personally, i don't think holmes had earned legit bragging rights until he beat ali but, in all honesty, ali was too worn down by drugs, in training for this fight, and i think this, more than even his age, resulted in the worst performance of his entire career, when he lost to holmes.
