It attempts to teach that food, water, and other material things are not the only things needed for life. It attempts to explain that men are also spiritual creatures requiring spiritual food (the word of God) as sustenance.

It means that a man who feeds just the body and not the soul by the word of God or Manna... (Pre-Christ) Old testament. Is making an incomplete life. You should not do one without the other to be a whole person.

It is from the Bible, from when the Jews were set free from slavery and made to roam in the dessert.

They were given spiritual food called manna and they complained not understanding the purpose of depriving the body its needs to bring it into balance to gain spiritual insight. Now, it is called fasting and it is done for that reason.

God wanted to show the Hebrews that even though they might not have thought so, He was the One that cared for them physically. But even more importantly that knowing God and knowing His Word (the scriptures) is also necessary for life.

It says a lot for the theory of 'free will' that Xtians claim exists, doesn't it? He 'humbles' you, by causing you to nearly starve to death, then 'feeds' you with what HE wants you to have, so you'll learn that when he speaks, you'd better damn well listen.

I think this is a technique used in brainwashing....

It means that the whole essence of our existence comes from God and only from God, not the things that we consider as our bare necessities. These are only His instuments. What really keeps us alive is His word and His love for us.
