It just seems ridiculous when you can provide them with a nice clean PDF version instead. Besides, everyone has a PDF reader on their machine and they shouldn't be changing any of the text in an applicant's resume.

The thing that gets me is that text can be copied from the standard Acrobat Reader just as easily as text can be copied from a Word file. All you need is to know how to use the PDF reader. Plus, if I thought that they were changing any part of my resume then, and I'm not sure what the best word to use here is, would feel like a violation of my resume, etc. Besides, if you mail them a hard copy of your resume, which used to be the standard process, then how do they copy or edit from that? The answer is they don't. So, it just doesn't make sense to me at all. Everyone has an Adobe Reader. If they don't have a Reader then they are behind the times and are too lazy to find out. It's free too!!

Not everyone has Adobe reader on their machine. Nearly everyone will have Microsoft Word or at least a text reader. Often an employer will need to modify the resume or copy/paste the information into their own database. A text file can accomodate this. A PDF cannot.

Now, I have applied for many jobs and I always send my resume in paper form as well as in a Word Doc. I never assume that the reader will be able to open a PDF, unless they specfically ask for it.

If you have the resume in PDF form, you must have had it in some sort of text form. Just send them that. Or you could just not get the job. Either way.
