Does it have to be in southern Michigan? Because there are quite a few rustic towns more to the north. I live in MI about two hours away from Detroit, but I travel quite a bit, and to be honest, unless you are going up north, Michigan really isn't that beautiful of a state, unless you love winter of course. If you really want to find an old town or something with a lot of American heritage and history in it, then I suggest you visit the New England area, or areas in Tennessee and the surrounding, I.E. Carolina and such. I'm sorry I know this really doesn't answer your question. I just thought I would throw some suggestions out there for you.

not sure what andersonp1964 is conversing approximately, Michigan is a state. interior the USA government, there's a Federal government (which has jurisdiction over the finished united states), a State government (which has jurisdiction over its very own state), and a close-by (city) government. As for cities, there are a ton. I stay in a city called commerce, yet once I have been to be "going into city", i could actually propose i replaced into going to Milford. If I have been going to the flicks, i could head to Waterford, the close by intense college is in White Lake, or the biggest place for procuring could be down in Novi. And those are in simple terms the places I stress on a common foundation, the furtherst being Novi (in basic terms some 20 minute stress). So yeah, there are a number of, many cities. in accordance to Wikipedia - "that's a itemizing of cities, villages and townships interior the U.S. state of Michigan, arranged in alphabetical order. Michigan has a million,529 such divisions in its eighty 3 counties."

I like Saugatuck. There's shopping, a park with trails, etc. ... and of course the beaches.

There are lots of nice vacation towns in southwestern Michigan but Saugatuck is my favorite.

Manistee, Ludington all on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Ludington has a great state park with lake michigan on one side a great fishing river on the other. Lots of things to do in town for kids, fun parks, mini golf, go karts, games. This weekend is the big crafts fair. (lots of other campgrounds also). 1/2 hr away from Michigans Adventure Park.

Manistee is full of old houses kept to date, if you like architecture this is a nice town to drive in, lake michigan and camping in the woods.

Having traveled there many times with friends just to take pictures of the beautiful historic downtown and homes in the area you might want to consider Dowagiac. It's big enough to provide a wide range of activities and lodging, as well as keeping that small town historical feel to it. Plus it's nice & easy to get to major highways to go to Lake Michigan or other places for family outings. The info I took below is from the city of Dowagiac's official website.

"Our location gives residents the advantages of small-town living with the cultural and recreational opportunities of larger cities including theater, shopping, dining, museums, hiking, boating, golfing, skiing, festivals for every season, and so much more."

Another place to consider is Constantine, this is another historic town, located convenient to many other destinations for activities, Three Rivers which has a beautiful park and petting zoo (all free), canoe & boat rentals for a leisurely ride down one of it's 3 rivers. (ha-ha), Close to the Indiana border where the famous restaurant Das Dutchman Essenhaus is located (wonderful wonderful food! don't miss the fresh bread and warm apple butter), and the huge flea market in Shipshewana, not to mention many many working Amish farms and communities that welcome visitors in their shops for their hand crafted quilts, woodworking, etc...

And finally, if none of these places are doing it for you, try this site which is the local tourism board's site. They've got info & links for all kinds of towns and attractions in the same area.
