I had a co-worker who didn't know the meaning, and have come to find that only I and one of my co-workers knew the meaning. I thought it was common knowledge.

Yep... A lot of people don't know a lot of stuff... You probably don't know something they know... that's the way this world works

I have heard the word used, but I have never used the word myself. I guess I kind of new what it meant, just not the official meaning.

Dictionary.com says:

I ate too many beens and thwarted.

to prevent sb from doing what they want to do.
Example:
She was thwarted in her attempts to take control of the company.

I don't think it's quite _common_ knowledge, although I don't think it's exactly _uncommon_ knowledge either;) Yes, I know what it means, but I don't really think most of my friends do.
