The bindi or vermilon dot is worn as a mark of beauty and purity of married Hindu women, although many other marks do exist.
The position corresponds to the inner eye (like the chaka point) which can look inwards whilst the other two eyes look outwards.

It is called a Bindi or Pottu (in south India)
In hinduism, the Bindi represents the 3rd eye, and offer spiritual protection.
Actually, they're not always red, and they're now almost a fashion statement in India and are worn in many different colors and patterns.

The dote tell everybody what caste they belong into - that is why you will see traditionally dressed Indian men with a dot too (especially if they are Brahmans)

I studied a bit of India history, and I do beleive it has to do with their religion of Krishna, and Budda. They beleive that this is where the "3rd eye" is, the eye is for inner relfection on your self and intentions towards others. Meditation helps keep ones karmic energy in balance when one looks inward to ones soul.

After they get maried they will have the red dot. It symbolizes the "third eye" chakra and it means that after getting married and having children they are focusing on spiritual growth.

It's to show they're married, actually. I once did it to look Indian and then my dad who had travelled to India told me it's for married women! Oops. ;)
