I need opinions. I am having a very informal reception following my wedding, just fingerfoods and drinks...then a huge cook out after. I have about 100 guests that will be attending. My question is on the seating, should I provide enough tables and chairs for all the guests to sit or should I do seating at tables for 75 and then have groupings of chairs around the room since it's very informal? My fiance and I are torn between the two. The reception itself is only about 2 hrs, with light music provided by an instrumental trio.

ok, to add to this a little...it's not the cost of money that I'm worried about. I have the money for all the tables. I just thought that having the less amount of tables wouldn't make it feel so crowded or formal and would give people the chance to move around and mingle. I will have enough of the chairs for everyone to sit..but they will be either at tables or in groupings around the room.

I went to a wedding that had a "mixer" atmosphere...tables for about half and random seating areas around the room...and I thought it was really nice. It seemd to keep people interacting more, and the party seemed to go on longer!! When you are all seated at tables it seems to section you off into groups of 5 or 6....If people want to move around and socialize with other people it gets difficult because there is less room to gather because of all the tables!! I also found that if people weren't all seated at tables that it induced much more dancing too!!

For this type of reception, you need to have enough seats available so that if everyone decides they ALL want to sit, they can. But there is no need to create a seating chart or to group them in any particular way. They will be getting up and mingling, probably table hopping too. A seating chart WILL make it too formal. And chances are that you won't actually need all the seats, but play it safe and have all 100 just in case.

does the place where the reception is held have couches??? since it is informal, you could go with a lounge theme. set up enough tables for about 50-75 then like you said have groupings around the room. couches and other comfy chairs make it much more intimate. see if the reception hall can accomodate.

i love your idea, it makes it much easier for people to mingle and enjoy themselves. just make sure the older crowd has some seating.

congrats and good luck!

I personally feel, since it's a very relaxed wedding reception, that you should have a nice headtable set for the bride/groom and attendants. Then set two tables for immediate family members. The rest of your guests should be able to choose where they'd like to sit and feel more comfortable. This is your special day so sit back and enjoy your company and blessings!

i think it all depends on the money. Have enough, provide all the guests with tables and chairs. Dont have enough, i guess the 75 chairs with tables and the groupings of chairs will do. However for cases of economising. The latter will do.

All the best

If it's informal and so you're not having a table plan then no, you won't need to provide seats at tables for everyone. People will want to move around, chat, stand, they won't stay at the same place all night. Your idea is excellent.

You should have enough seats for everyone but you could not have a seating chart. Everyone can sit where they want.

Or for less chaos. Create seating for you, your wedding party, grandparent's, parents and siblings. That way the important people wont be spread all over the place.

There's always some that stand & eat, some will be standing & talking, some slow dancing, ....At least have enough chairs for everyone. And have enough tables so that people have a place to lay their plate & eat.

you will probly relise it will make it look more crowded if people were standing all over the place, to play it safe i would do seating for all the guests, most people like to sit down and eat and it will prevent your reception from getting messy with food all over the floor.

You need to have seating for all the guests. It would be rude to have them have to eat off their laps especially when they took the time to come to your wedding and purchase you a gift.

Good luck!
