i know and it's not as if they even whisper, they talk so loud you can't hear the person on the phone. i have a friend who does it and it drives me insane.
whatever it is they need to interrupt you with is not normally life or death either.

Welcome to the art of multi-tasking!
I personally only interrupt someone if it is very important. Then I make my request quick.
If I am on the phone and some one must get hold of me - I tell the caller to hang on a moment and address the question. If the query takes precedence over my call I finish the conversation and handle the problem. If the query is less important than my call I tell the person that I am busy with an important call and that they can I will deal with them later.
If you are on a very important call - why not put up a do not disturb sign?

If you have a person in your office that you are talking with, they probably won't interrupt you, but they may just make themselves seen briefly so that you will know they want to talk to you. However, if you are on the phone, they can't see the person you are talking with, so they may think the phone call isn't important; they may assume you are just chatting with a friend, etc. But it is still rude.

I am beginning to think that being talked to while being on the phone doesn't bother some people. Hear me out. I have always been extremely sensitive to noise and distraction. I freak out at things other people go "huh? hear what?"
I think people vary in their ability to deal with distraction. We can't understand the people who can deal with two conversations at once and they don't understand our problem.
Interesting fact about me--(oh boy you are so interesting NOT) if somebody puts a note on my desk with a question on it, I can scribble and answer to it and not miss a beat of my phone conversation but it somebody talks to me in person while I'm on the phone, I lose both conversations.

I think it's a matter of their self-awareness or overconfidence. I assume that they are more important that what you are doing and the person on the line, so they should have priority. It's plain rude and very inconsiderate.

Oh BOY! Have you touched a nerve here. I hate that!! People are selfish and ignorant. I have been very rude to these "interrupters" and it still doesn't faze them!
I sure wish I had a decent answer to this question.

Telephone conversations are more juicy. So they want to hear whatever they can.
