I understand that its quite easy to zip and unzip with the Windows XP but does it work on all file type extensions? In particular sound files like WAV? How about MP3?

Windows can unzip .ZIP files. If the .WAV and .MP3 files are in a .ZIP file then yes, this can be done. .WAV and .MP3 cannot be "unzipped."
