BOBCHANZ,
I wonder at all the implications of it. It obviously is a false religion. But without it, how else would God have brought them against Israel? Now as I understand it, all the enemies of Israel will be brought together and attack it, that's when the whole Zechariah 14 thing will happen.
After that, there will be Jesus and whoever survives that ordeal will then know the He is Lord ( it will be so very obvious then!). But I guess that Islam is going to unite the Arab and some Persian lands. But the kings of the East? Now China and Russia are not really Islamic countries, I think they will come to the battle too. I would believe that oil will be their intended prize. But the Islamic world along with whoever gathers against Israel will be slaughtered. At the very least Islam may be necessary to get that done.

Interpretations can be more than a little dodgy. They can be downright criminal. Get an unbiased translation of the Koran - there was one published by Penguin in the early 60s, - and make up your own mind. You'll find it surprisingly peaceful.
Never forget, that until the New Testament was translated into local languages and people learnt to read, Christians were also at the mercy of the priest's interpretation.
The Sharia is an addition to the Koran and only an interpretation of what Mohamed actually wrote down. The Sharia (Islamic Law) can be interpreted in many ways, but has a tendency to be uncompromising. Many of these interpretations are taken from the Bible. 'An eye for an eye' for example, or 'If your right hand offend you, cut it off.'
And as far as the Koran is concerned, women are to be protected. Might not suit modern day feminists, but at least there is a recognition that men can't keep their eyes from straying.

ISLAM IS ON THE RISE
During the last 20 years, the number of Muslims in the world has been increasing steadily. Statistics for the year 1973 indicate that the world population of Muslims was 500 million; now, it has reached 1.5 billion. Today, every fourth person is a Muslim.1 It is probable that the Muslim population will continue to increase and that Islam will become the world's largest religion.

Any religion can be OK.
It certainly causes problems when some of that religion begin to think that everyone must be followers of Islam.
I have one thing to say to those people.. We in the Americas (where the country was founded on Christianity) believe this way because that is our countries ways.
If YOU come here and do not like it then PLEASE go back to your Islamic country and enjoy your way of life over there... OTHERWISE keep your mouth shut in public. If some people here decide they would like to know more about Islam they will find you.

It is one of the younger of the religions.
It is based on bringing peace and order in the very difficult living conditions of the arabian desert, so it has some very simple but strict rules - as life in desert would be.
Even marrying 4 wives was a very good solution at that time as many men died in battles (fighting for the limited resources) and there were too many widows who needed to form in to families.
The muslims leaders in the early stages of development of Islam tried to convert as many people into their religion. There was certainly the political motive to conquer new lands an gain power and wealth in the name of Islam. So you can say that it has been used as an excuse to gain wealth and power right from the beginning.
I have not read the Quran but I am sure it tells us to live peaceful cultured lives.
The current situation of the religion of Islam is therefore very diverse. We have some very highly cultured and educated people and on the other hand we have some radicals who gain political power in the name of their religion.
The situation of Israeli Occupation of Palestine - even if it was Israeli homeland some centuries ago - has led to the agresssion of the Palestinian people who see Israel and USA as against Islam.
I wonder if Israel ever attempted to convince the palastinians or the Islamic world that it wanted a peaceful occupation as a guest state and it never as a guest earned the respect of a house owner. If it was achieved in the early stages, today we would not see 9/11, 7/11 or Hizbollah, Desert War, Libiyan agression in Scotland etc., etc., etd.,
I am an Indian Hindu and I have scores of Muslim friends who are life friends. In India also, it is only some of the Muslim and Hindu leaders who exploit minor differences in religion for their political gains.

Shazia Mirza, a Muslim female comedian, yes believe it or not there are a few (US immigration held her for two hours, unconvinced there could be such a thing as a female Muslim stand-up) said "Why do Muslim men believe that in Heaven they are granted 77 virgins?"
"And what do the Women get?"
Mirza said there has been a great misunderstanding of the Koran by MEN. It was 77 Raisins or Dates. Raisins and Dates were very precious in the 7th century AD.
"So lots of innocent people are dying all over the world just for 77 Raisins or Dates!"
BTW Folks Shazia is performing at the Pleasance, Edinburgh Comedy Festival at 9.30 PM every night from the 2nd-28th August 2006. PLEASE GO AND HAVE SOME FUN!
Remember, if you don't laugh, the Terrorists have won.
Shazia Mirza quotes:
In the USA after 9/11: "My name is Shazia Mirza, or at least that is what it says on my pilot's licence." "Everyone in the audience looked at each other," she recalls, "seeing if it was all right to laugh - and then they just erupted."
To her audience in Germany after the invasion of Iraq urging them: "Oh, come on, join the War. It isn't the same without you".
"I do a joke about having my bum pinched in Mecca - which actually happened - that it was the hand of God. But Muslims get upset when I mention it. That's the hypocrisy that I hate. Why do men do things like that in Mecca, on the Haj? Me and my brothers saw a man beating his wife and dragging her by the ear near the holy places and no one said a thing. I mean, in England, the police would have been called straight away."
"On the road, men go for anything, they really do. But I don't let them in. I don't get men hitting on me, but I get Muslim men hitting me." Mirza has been attacked on stage in London. She allows herself a rueful laugh.
She's proud of her Muslim heritage, and devoutly respectful of Islam, but she's still been physically assaulted onstage. "I did this gig in Brick Lane for charity and I was the only woman on the bill," she says. "I did the first two lines of my set and three Asian guys jumped up from the audience and said I was a disgrace to my religion and a disgrace to my culture, and I shouldn't be doing stand-up because I'm a woman, and I'm just bringing shame to the community, and then they attacked me." One of them punched her in the face, but nobody in the audience did anything to help her, and nor did the two white security guards. It was left to one of the other comedians to take her assailants outside. A friend called the police, but they told her it would do more harm than good to take the matter any further. "It's bizarre, because the skinheads think I'm fantastic. The yobs, the white working-class youths can't praise me enough, and yet the Muslim men think I'm awful."

Maybe this should give a clue as to how most westerners think about Islam: It's really hard to separate feeling for some muslims that might be good people when all we hear about is muslims blowing themself up and killing innocent people. And, not to mention the way they threat women.

I think that there are some good aspects of some of it.
Because in life Muhammad did not live what he preached, and because the laws are so oppressive to women, with men being able to have multiple wives, sleep with their servants, etc. and the penalty for women in adultery is Stoning them to death, I cannot accept that his book is from God.
I have no problem with them worshiping as they choose, I just want to have the right to do the same, and I do NOT want to live in an Islamic society under Shara rule.
Google Islam in Iran to see what it would be like.
Peace!
