for one, our public educational system teaches nothing and merely babysits the kids until they turn 18. nearly every subject in school is taught as a list of things to memorize with no training in critical thought or independent problem-solving. any time spent watching american television quickly reveals a strong anti-intellectuallism (i.e. it's not "cool" to be smart) and a blind worship of youth and wealth for it's own sake. some americans believe "might makes right"- since we can bomb or sanction anyone who disagrees with us we "must" have somehow "earned" the priviledge to do so.
it's a good question, though, because with our standard of living and resources we should be a hell of a lot smarter.
