Cramps are a sign of dehydration. Water is the cure but if you've been sweating for more than 3 hours, you will need some electrolytes so drink a watered down cool aid. One of the biggest gags in the nation today is certain companies tricking people into thinking they need electrolytes... and they don't! Most people don't even know what electrolytes are or what they do... but yet they think they need them "because the company's ad says I do", lol!

Electrolytes aid in cellular work and help produce energy called ATP. A sodium ion comes out of a cell and hooks up with a potassium ion to bring it into the cell for use. The potassium ion does not cross this gradient into the cell without the help of the sodium... it tags along with the sodium to enter the cell. The gradient of pulling that potassium ion into the cell alone produces ATP and the potassium is later used in the Krebs cycle to produce more ATP. Most people have an excess of sodium in their system so potassium is usually what falls short in this system.

Nutshell version:
If urine is yellow... drink water
If you get thirsty... you're already dehydrating so drink water
If workout is longer than 3 hours... you will most likely need electrolytes.

The best electrolye (and cheapest) is cool aid mixed at about half the concentration that's called for on the container.. it should just be only "slightly" sweet!

I drank more water in the year I was in Iraq, than the rest of my life combined and I was usually on the verge of dehydration. i know of some guys that cramped up and others started getting sick and throwing up... that's how bad they got! They did NOT pay attention to how much they were drinking. You have to actually think about drinking when sweating that much... BEFOR you feel the thirst!!!

Get into some shade or a cool area and drink a sports drink (gatorade or something).

Try to avoid getting to that point in the future.

Make sure that you drink plenty of water. It will help keep you hydrated. You start getting cramps as you start becoming dehydrated.
