Paint. It's easier, cheaper, more durable and alot easier to change in a few years.
I put a mossy green in my livingroom and a sunny yellow in the kitchen. One bedroom is even a deep red, don't be afraid of darker colors, you'll be surprised how good they look.

I prefer paint to wallpaper. Borders are OK. Painting is just so much easier and easy to change a couple years down the road.
Go to www.sherwin-williams.com and click on Color Visualizer. For your master bedroom, I would suggest something like Perfect Geige 6073 (a taupe color) or Hazel 6471 (a light grayish green). For the 2 year old's room, Lite Lavender 6554 or Enchant 6555. We painted our 2 year old daughter's room a lavender and bought Disney princess bedding, Disney princess pictures for the wall and a Disney princess clock. For the 9 year old, I would let her help choose. What is her favorite color? If it's pink, do a light shade of pink so it's not too loud. If it's blue, a light shade of blue, etc. I find the best way to choose is to go to a store and pick out the paint cards that you like in the store and bring them home to see what they look like in the room under natural and artificial lighting. Something that looked good on the computer or in the store might not be the right shade in your actual room.
Good luck!

No body wallpapers anymore. it's a pain in the butt to remove when you change your mind and with the colors available today... you can almost paint to look like wallpaper. Tape it off and use different colors.
Perhaps a decorative wall paper trim along the ceiling will curb your appetite for the 70's appeal, lol!
besides... the best thing about paint... if you don't like the look, you can paint over it! This becomes particularly useful when your children age and their tastes in colors change. Let your 9 year old choose her colors... it'll be fun and a great bonding experience for the two of you designing and painting her room!

The use of color is also something very personal. It stimulates our senses, power our mood, and helps create a particular ambiance. How we respond to an individual color depends on our nature, extroverts tend to feel happy with bold colors, while introverts prefer more passive colors.
Through using specific combinations of color, combined with a careful consideration of simple color schemes is often the most effective.
Try not to use more than one or two principal colors in a room, as well as a contrasting or balancing tone. The best way to choose a background color for the room is to trial with a palette of different shades and tones, in combination with the color and textures of the furniture and materials. Remember the general color schemes of a home have to be in agreement. The walls define the space in a room, while the colors, to a large degree, define the mood.
Colored light, furnishing materials, and structural proportions, we can create a home that is welcoming, helpful, and comfortable. Walls are similar to background music: each color tone is like a musical note can create a pleasant-sounding harmony while others grate with each other.
The color with which we surround ourselves will without doubt have an effect on us, and so it is important to feel comfortable with our choice. A discussion with a professional color consultant can help to decide individual needs and select appropriate color.
Colors can be divided into three main groups: those that stimulate and uplift, those that relax and calm, and those that provide harmony or balance. So, having taken a number of things into thought when decorating a room, such as the size of the space, the amount of light, the function if the room, and the style and mood we wish to create, we finally, and most importantly, need to consider the needs of the people who use it.

Paint! I hate, hate wallpaper. Yuck, even though I have seen some semi-nice things done with it. Look at faux painting. Are you crafty? Go to your local hardware store for ideas. Your girls would get a kick out of helping decorate their own rooms. Paint is easier to change as they grow, so let them have bright cheerful colors now! If they want to tone it down as they mature that's easy enough. You could do your room in deeper, richer, cooler more soothing colors, deeper green, maroon, mustard.

You should definitely paint! Like the others have mentioned, there are a lot of fun things you can do with paint. I know at home depot they do workshops every now and then, and there are a lot of home decorating shows you can learn from too, like trading spaces, design on a dime, and so on. It's easier to change later, it's more versatile, I would say hands down, you should go with paint.

I hate white walls too, but paper is a pain, expensive and sometimes you get tired of it. If you chose to paper, do it sparingly. Maybe an accent wall or just paint a slightly darker shade of the color you chose on one wall for interest. I like yellow walls. Buttery and warm with white trim. Let the girls chose their own colors. If they are too "wild" go with a softer shade of what they chose. My son chose lime green for his room. I took it down a few notches and he didn't even realize it wasn't the color he had originally picked.

with a young child i would say use a washable paint easier to clean if they draw on the walls. if you have colours you like but cant match with brands on the market most good paint stores can mix paint to any colour you bring them.
