I've been twice in Turkey - and had a fantastic time. I travelled with www.friendshiptravel.com which is a singles tour operator, so a gulet which would normally accommodate 16 people had just 8 of us on board - bliss! It is full board usually on the gulet and the days are very relaxed. Food is basic but very healthy and delicious - with morning coffee and afternoon tea thrown in too! The gulet usually sails on after each meal, anchoring in small bays for a swim etc.

The first time we sailed out of Marmaris and had an overnight stop in Fethiye, the second time we had an overnight stop on the Greek island of Symi.

Shortfalls - not many I can think of, other than bathroom facilities are basic - sometimes pump action toilets - and cabins small - for a single in a double cabin it was fine, but you have to be in a good relationship to share such a confined space! Also - drinks are available on board and usually all put on your 'tab' which you pay at the end of the trip. Watch out - imported drinks are double the price of local ones - so stick to beer and wine or the final bill could be a bit of a shock!

Crew consists of captain and 2 lads, who do all the cooking and cleaning etc. We asked our captain if we could unfold the sails rather than run on engine power for a while and he was happy to oblige. Evening meals are very relaxed and if you have a good crew, they will play your CD's and encourage you to get up and boogie, or even teach you some Turkish dancing.

Most sail out of either Marmaris or Fethiye - hope you find something - I certainly recommend it! Both times I did a week in a hotel follwed by a week on the gulet - and went home totally relaxed.

My friend has a Gulet in Kalkan, Turkey. You wont find a better way of spending your holiday as you are some where different every night.

However, you do have to think about if you will get on with the other guests on board as you will be spending the next week/ two weeks with them.

The board is usually full as the crew will cook your brekkie, lunch and dins however you can go ashore if you wish to eat out.

Mid summer is excellent as you can sleep out under the stars.

If you want an excellent travel company with a good choice of gulets i.e. different sizes then check out www.tapestryholidays.com. I have travelled with these 5 times and have not had a bad hol yet.

Good luck and happy sailing.

A friend of mine went on a gulet holiday on the Nile in Egypt. She broke her ankle jumping off the side of the boat - so my advice would be to use the steps!

Tell me what you mean by gulet and I'll give you an answer. I thought it could be Turkish but can't find it and my Turkish speaking friends don't know either. If it's English, please check spelling!
