I do think it will be possible some day, but not at the moment. We don't posses powerful-enough technology to destroy whole of earth and every living organism. But I believe we will have that technology someday in the future.
What would I think? Probably something similar when you are driving a car and you realize that doing a simple maneuver you could kill everyone in the car including yourself. I think we are not emotionally capable of understanding what the total destruction of the world would mean, so the feeling would have to be something similar.
I think that a person that doesn't accept that he/she is capable of thoughts of "evil" will be hit hardest when he/she realized that this kind of a power is within his/her grasp.

The person above me beat me to it...
yes, there are many buttons like that already...
each can send a multiple warhead weapon that can cause unimaginable damage.
Just the submarines alone have enough nuclear missles to destroy the world many times over...
and there are many more missles on land.
This is not time to be playing church...or sitting on the fence of doubt.
The end of the world, as we know it, is upon us.
It wont be Russia, the USA or China to push the button...it'll be some little renegade country and some fanatical, maniac dictator who will.
Nothing will be able to save you.
Not the god of Darwin, or science, or the gods of Hinduism, or the false prophet Mohammed, or Buddha, or the Pope, or the Dalai Lama...
nobody but Jesus Christ.

No, I don't believe it is possible. I think that life and stories linger in the atmosphere and become part of a collective unconscious that will hang around, and attach to whatever comes next.

I'm sure one of the worlds super powers (probably us, in fact!) has such a button, so that we could effectively wipe out much of the world, with so few remaining survivors that wed all die.

Yep. That button is located in our crotch and it can go off at anytime. Nothing would be left. Nothing except cockroaches, that is.
