You never tell them the truth. They're not asking to be genuinely concerned about your well being anyway. It's just a "rule of etiquette." People really dont' want to hear that your wife left you last night and ran off with your dad, your dog died this morning, you spilled coffee on your suit on the way to work, your car broke down at a traffic light and a cop stopped and gave you a ticket for obstructing traffic. You usually just say, "Good", "Great", "Fine", "Wonderful" and "How are you?" and just leave it at that.

If you are in a hurry just as the other person, say fine thank you. If you feel that the person does not really care and is just asking, start off on how your day started off, then narrate all the grouses you have against the world, then see if he is interested and he asks you again.

At work the general best line is "I'm doing good/great/well. How are you?" This is called "keeping it light".

If you are responding to your partner then honesty is probably best. There may be times when it's in your best interest to come up with a different answer.

I'm honest...I tell them just exactly how I am. "I'm OK, but a little tired today." or "Doing well, except for this splitting sinus headache I have." I figure if they don't really want to know, they won't ask.

Just because no one really wants to know or expects an answer other than "Fine and you?", I always answer "ornery!"

it really gets on my nerves when that is the thing that people say whenever they have nothing else to say to you. most of the time they don't even wait for a reply. i'd say "fine thanks"
