Y!A limits the number of words on the subject line, so I had to clarify "bad" in the comment section.

I don't know about good or bad, but I think "needy" people -- people who require something outside themselves for guidance, because they don't have much faith in their ability to handle it alone.

There are both kinds of people who rely on God. People have been burnt at the stake for preaching the word of God. There were some Bibles being delivered into China. When the Chinese Government found out, they dumped the Bibles into the water. The next day some missionaries came to the area to see if any Bibles were salvageable. The Chinese people in that town wanted the Bibles so much, they dove into the deep water and retrieved the Bibles and put them on top of their houses to dry. Some people put themselves in harms way every day, just to hear and see the Word of God.

There are two groups of people that need gods. Leaders and the needy. Leaders use a belief in a god to control the needy. The needy need a god as both guidance and for the hope that things will be better. This relationship allows the leaders to guide the needy to what they want. See the Religious Right (aka reich).

Bad people are not going to invent a being who calls them to repent from their evil ways and to live a holy life of love towards God and their neighbors.

That's one of the classic arguments for the authenticity of the Bible. An evil person isn't going to make up stories that condemn their own way of life and a good person isn't going to go around telling lies and attempting to deceive the masses.

Both, there were men like Lao Tzu, who sought to help people find a way to live, and men like Paul who sought to line his pockets and control.

Just people.......

I believe that the idea of god was created to explain the unexplainable, validate our existence and to introduce some form of social control.

Because they need something bigger than themselves to explain why good and bad things happen. If you win the lottery, god did it. If you lose your job, satan did it. One entity cannot encompass extreme good and bad. It has been this way throught world history.

honestly I dont think it has much to do with good or bad. I think it is people's lack of faith in themselves that makes them turn to their God(s).
Of course, being a non religious person thats how I see it, others would argue with me on that one. Its just my opinion so no nasty comments please!

Good people, because it allows them to feel smug (only bad people fear being judged, so they pretent that a cosmic judge does not exist).
