I have two other minpins as well and he seeks out there food because I feed all 3 separately. Believe me, he's fast and he's sneaky! But, I want to know how to bring his weight down down without having him act like he's starving all the time.

First, you should ask your vet before starting any weight loss programs with your pet, just like you would ask your doctor. There are a couple diseases that can cause weight gain, like hypothyroid disease, so best to make sure!

The best thing you can do for all your dogs is get them on a high quality food. It should not have a lot of sugar or grain ingredients (especially corn), preferably none. Change the food gradually over a week and give them the recommended amount on the bag. Slowly reduce the amount by a few kibbles every other day or so, and if some of your babies need more, raise the amount. Keep feeding them separately, and get a crate for your chubby one to eat in, or feed him in the bathroom. My grandma's chihuahua lost enough weight just by eliminating treats from the diet. It was too hard for her to portion the treats for such a tiny dog, so she fills a container with the whole daily amount, feeds her some twice a day, and gives the regular food as a treat, taken out of the daily allowance of food.
Also, she gives fresh treats like carrot bits, steamed veggies, etc. She also walks her daily (consider hiring a dog walker if you want!) and obedience trained her so she can have her stay in the other room while she eats without begging. It's so hard to give in to those eyes!!!

It's really difficult to put one dog on a weight loss program when you have multiple dogs. I've been there and done that, as have many of my clients.

First, I would not recommend one of the low cal dog foods available on the market. Science Diet makes one, I believe its called R/D? I've been that route with my own dog in the past and it was torture for her and me. Those low cal foods are so high in fiber that they might as well contain Styrofoam. My own dog became obsessed with food and began catching and devouring grasshoppers in the back yard to supplement her diet!

Purchase a premium brand of food such as Innova EVO, but only give about one half the recommended amount of food daily. Keep some sliced carrots (small pieces) on hand and offer them as a treat to your little chow hound a couple times a day and maybe at bedtime.

Finally take him for long walks daily (Not during the hottest time of the day) and make sure that he gets some exercise each day. The weight has to come off slowly, but you will see a difference in a couple of months.

My little Chihuahua went from 6lbs to 15 lbs after getting fixed. I went to Hertz website and they were giving away books for dogs who were overweight. I take Mylo for a 20 minute walk every evening, and he eats when I do. In the morning he has his food down for 45 minutes (only 1 cup of food), then he gets his water all day, and in the evening he gets his food for another 45 minutes. It puts him on a schedule and helps him loose the weight he needs too. I've been doing this with him for 3 months now and he's down to 11lbs, the vet has seen a huge difference in his energy and health. With smaller breeds you really have to watch them and their weight, they can get a problem with their pancreas (sp??) that can cause it to fail. With multipule dogs, you can seperate him while they are all eating (our little chubby guy eats in the dining room with us so that he has his food and doesn't try to steel ours, and the others are in the kitchen, just make sure to pick up their food when they are done eating otherwise they can just eat out of bordom

try putting the food up after they have eaten and then after a few hours bring it back down for a little bit and then put it back up that way he can't constantly eat all the time.
