Absolutely, it is a common trait of autism. With self-injury or any sort of self-stimulatory act, the best thing to do is discover what precipates the act. For example, if math stresses the kid out, then maybe being asked to take out his math book causes him to start hurting himself. Recording when he begins hurting himself and how long it lasts can help you identify the cause of his behavior, then either eliminate that problem or help him deal with it in a more appropriate manner. There may be medication to deal with it, but it is always preferable to help the child deal with the behavior without drugs when possible.

Autism is a disease - and some people with severe cases of it can 'self stimulate'. This can be head banging, hitting (themselves or others). Anyone that has this level of the disease needs to have someone there to assist them. I would never expect a teacher to manage a class AND manage someone that will hurt themselves.

There is a reason. In the case of my nonverbal autistic daughter, she bites her wrists and will sometimes bang her head when she's unhappy about something and has no other way of telling me that there is something wrong.

Yes. It is stimulation to the autistic child. That is why you see autistic children rock or have what we call ticks.

Yes, my nephew is autisic, and he is in a world all his own. Some autistic kids are violent, towards others, as well as towards themselves.

It is possible and if happening you may need to see how to best protect your child from him/herself. Speak with a doctor or counselor.

Absolutely.....there is medication that the child's parents can give to restrict that activity....but the parents must take the initiative to obtain it.
