Oh no, I disagree. All people can sing.No matter how the song is sung,regardless if it is out of tune, if someone sings a song then he/she can sing. It maybe unpleasant to others ears but at least they tried to sing, right? I guess you intend to ask why only few people sings well or professionally. It is a talent which can be enhanced by dedication and constant practice. The quality of voice is individual-variable as well. It is a gift if you got such a golden voice. Hence to be a singer is not just a matter of choice.

No I'm sorry I am not agree with that sentence "everybody can sing" No no No, then every body can dance, every body can do sports... etc etc.
Many people can sing because they have not only a "voice" they can sing because they have musical talent, they are not Tone deaf. Of course some people are more talented and they can sing better.
Unfortunately some people can't sing at all, there are many reasons: Tone Deaf, Not talent at all, Vocal Chords Problems, Fiscally problems and some diseases contribute to make a person not able to sing.
Some people here need to read more.

It has been my experience that most people can carry a tune, but very few people have good singing voices. The people who are completely tone-deaf are in the minority. No idea why some people can sing and some people can't. Just like some people can draw or paint and some can't, and I don't know the answer to that one either.

Anyone can sing. They just need training. If somone says they are tone def then they are stupid. No one can be tone def. If you play a C on a guitar and then play a C# ask the person if they sound different. If they say yes, ( most likely they will because there is no such thing as tone def), then they arn't tone def. They're just afraid of singing.

Because not everyone was blessed with adequate vocal cords and even those that were may not take the time to train/look after their voice.

thats not true. if u belongs to india, you come to know that criteria is changing. Means you know Mr. Reshamia(Himesh). If he can sing than you understand na........ the basic thing is whether you learn music or not, thats really important.
