We became free thinking individuals. It's like the ant colony. We became less like an ant colony. We're free to do, sort of, whatever. If an ant starts doing things on his own or changes his beliefs, he is immediately killed within the colony. One colony doesn't like that because it influences their colony to do the same thing. They are trying to do something about that and we are trying to stop them. It's not easy because there are a whole lot of ants... er I mean radical Islamists.
To answer the second part of your question... A lot of people don't know this but, we made a mistake in Beirut. When we were there way back in the 70s, they loved us believe it or not. We traded with them. The people of Islam are actually hospitable people, but they hold grudges for a long, long time (well duh). There were five factions there during this time and no one had legitamate control. We were there as a peacekeeping element and were doing ok. We made the leader of the Christian faction the leader of Beirut. It was fine until he decided to take out a group of Druids to the North. He asked our Navy to shell the Druids but the Admiral who was the theater commander said, "No way, you're not going to put America in your pocket to do your dirty work." Honorable Baker was in the area, he pulled rank and authorised the shelling. Wiped the Druids out and made all the Islamists very mad. It all went down hill from there.

America funds and gives ligitimacy to Israel. The islamic fundies hate israel because the land was stolen from arabs (liberated from the ottomans with palestinian's help but given to the jews) and then the act was sanctified by the UN, not to mention the ongoing oppression there. Also, america is seen as the flagship nation of the western world. Western liberal values regarding the status of women and pretty much the entire entertainment/alcohol industry in general are viewed as carnal sins to be stopped at all costs, and blamed on america.
Really though, bin laden laid out his grievances in well publicized articles.

Terrorism comes from many different causes, but in short I believe that the US has antagonized these people due to its foreign policy, attitude towards non-americans, stranglehold over world economy, grip on power over the world due to its weapons arsenal, and its general "gun-ho" attitude and an itchy trigger finger.

Challenge islamic fundamentalists by expanding the idea of freedom and liberty and the fundamentalists will lose their ways and control over their members.

When it's boiled down, it's because of the American support for Isreal.
