(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or
drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.

g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of
it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design,
picture, or drawing of any nature.

(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic
uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations.

Obviously Americans disrespect the flag daily, but I guess we nip and pick what codes we wanna follow and which ones we don't.

No, absolutely not !
I fought for what our flag stands for. I make it a point to educate people on the proper use when I see something that is disrespectful. I have actually removed someones baseball cap for them during the playing of our national anthem. I asked him to remove it and he chose not to. I told him he could have it back after the anthem was over and that's exactly when he got it back.
Thanks for posting the question out there with some etiquette tips !!!

I think it is very obvious when someone is trying to disrespect the flag. They make it very clear.

The apparel business was a big thing during the Viet Nam war, when war protesters INTENTIONALLY were disrespecting the flag to show they felt nationalism wasn't worth fighting over this particular war. It thereafter became a fashion, and in the 70's nostalgia fashion right now, people don't even realize it was born of protest. They think they are being patriotic to wear part of the flag. So do the other side, who have fits if they wear the flag, BECAUSE they think it shows support for US Nationalism. That is why some schools in California have banned wearing any part of the US flag. To keep there from being fights.

I don't think anyone is confused about intent.

On the other hand, you raise an excellent point. I think they should teach flag etiquette in our schools. What do you think?

Nope. To most people it's not a big deal but with my husband in the military it takes on a new meaning for me. I keep a flag outside my house and I must untangle it from the pole 16 times a day, but its really important to me to keep it hanging and looking respectable.

I havent disrespected flags of any country and I do not intend to ever. Every nation and its people have their own emotions and sense of nationalism and that should be respected.

I am not an American by the way ..

I think its silly to wear a flag shirt or a flag pair of pants..i think its sad when i see a flag pole with a torn or tattered flag thats been up for years. That just shows disrespect for our country. To burn a flag is a disgrace to our country. If people really understood what the flag meant to us they would respect it..And when i see people with tattoos of flag that just shows me how much they love their country.Im proud to be an american..I love my country..

Never. I have respect for the flag and the men and women who fought under the American flag.

I don't know about all that, but atleast those that wear it are proud of their country.I never would criticize anyone who wanted to display our flag, however misrepresented.Their ignorance is no more or less than most americans. They just don't know and so are doing what they feel is okay.I don't think they are picking which codes to follow, they probably don't know the codes.

I've never dishonored my flag, and the fashions you have mentioned irritate the bejeevers out of me. I have to remember though that these people believe they are honoring the flag in their own way by proudly displaying it. To me its just an absolute fashion violation.

If a third of those fans dutifully place their hands over their hearts, yes it is a shame for the Senator not to do it. He should set the example as a public figure.
