A sure fire way of making revenue. They have invented a light bulb that doesn't burn out under normal conditions, but if they sold that then their business would crumble. Mass Production/Mass Consumption depends on disposable technology.

But there is a down side. Decades ago before the VIC20 was around, computer memory was extremely precious - a Gigabyte was not even a pipe dream. So when it came to installing the computer's internal calendar program, they set the year at two digits instead of 4, thinking that the computers they were making would be obsolete by 2000AD when it would cause a problem. They were, but the makers of new computers thought the same thing, and Y2K crept up on us before we were aware it needed fixing. (Y2K did exist, it wasn't urban legend. I myself lost some files because of it. Y2K causing worldwide catastrophes, and planes falling out of the skies was the urban legend.)

So disposable technology is both a blessing and a curse.
