Hosting a small going away party (an evening party) and trying to figure out the best way to cater for the person going away who is a very picky eater but still keep the other guests happy. This person does not eat red meat (only chicken cooked a certain way), doesn't really like any sauces, doesn't really like other people's food (that is if I ask everyone to bring a dish), only certain vegetables. I know that's not a lot to go on, but anyone have any ideas?

The best way to do this is a pot luck... Everyone brings a dish... With you making the things your picky person likes... That way you satisfy everyone.

Well, thank goodness such a picky person is moving away!

Serve the chicken they will eat, cooked they way they will eat it. Then the rest of the food, I would serve what you like, Serve what goes w/ the chicken dish, what compliments it, and not worry about whether your guest of honor will eat every single offering on the buffet table. The pickiness is THEIR problem, but they are trying to make itYOUR problem. If they insist, are acting like a bully.

I'd give menu ideas, but i don't know what kind of chicken dish you are going to be stuck making.

I would make or have catered what the guest like along with some regular food that your guest like sort of like a smorsaborg. Then everyone can pick out what they want and the main quest is taken care as well.

It would be best to have the chicken and vegetables that she will eat, but then also make things other people will enjoy too. If not for the entire meal, then make a big variety of appetizers and desserts, so people don't feel overall that your party was plain and boring, but your guest of honor still has what they enjoy most.

For dietary reasons, I eat the same way.

I suggest kabobs (various meats/vegies on sticks, let your guests choose)
Three different types of vegetables, at least one baked version of something (like a squash casserole). I've found most people will eat "casserole" anything, regardless of what is in it.
Simple appetizers like cold shrimp, brushetta, (finger type of items).
For dessert - serve something chocolate and something non-chocolate. Stay aware from ice cream or heavy sauces. If you're serving dessert at the table, keep all portions small and offer second helpings to the "large" eaters. If you are serving dessert after coffee, have something light and easy to eat.
Have fun and thanks from someone who also watches carefully what I eat!

Keep a lot of food on low tables and have lots of forks around so the main guest can 'pick' the food.

make something the person likes....others will join in

You should make the main guest favorite dish and have appetizers on the side, (to keep the other guests happy).

Ask the Picky person what he or she would like to have. Make that and then make something good for everyone else.
