In some situations yes. Has the person been accurately diagnosed? That must be asked. Just because a doctor says someone is mentally ill, are they?
If this person is truly having a mental health crisis, then hopefully the treatments they are receiving will help the problem.
I believe there is never any time to give up on people, everyone has the potential to recover from whatever problem they have. They just have to believe they will get better.
There is always HOPE.

Yes of course!
That's like asking if a person with a physical illness can recover. Mental illness is so much. Many people recover from depressions, ptss, eating-disorders to name some. Some don't recover, some are well on drugs bipolar disorders are often so.
Then there are various chronic diseases. Some can function well with medication and/or therapy. Some doesn't. Mental illnesses can be as different as a cold and aids.

Normal is just a setting on your dryer. (with apologies to Patsy Clairmont, who wrote the book with this title)
I have been living with a mental illness for over half of my life. A mental illness can be anything from post-partum depression to paranoid schizophrenia. Some can be "cured", but most of us will require some form of treatment for the rest of our lives.
As for becoming a functional member of society, yes, absolutely! I have disthymia which is a form of depression. I also have OCD and Social Anxiety Disorder, albeit to a much lesser degree. I am on medication and in therapy and may be for a very long time, possibly for the rest of my life. I work full-time at an office job which I have held for the past four years. I am raising a child; I go to school full-time. I pay my bills, pay my taxes, help out with my neighbors, etc., everything that a "normal" person does.
I'll tell you one thing. There is not one single person in this world who could not benefit from some form of therapy, regardless of what their issues are. Those of us who have had the courage to stand up and do something about it are generally much more well-adjusted than the so-called "normal" people!!!

It depends on the kind of illness they have. Some mental illnesses can be cured, others not. For example depression can be cured, but not schizophrenia. Each illness is different.
People who have mental illnesses that cannot be cured can usually get medication that keep the symptoms away or milden them and help the patient function normally even if their illness can't be fully cured.
A lot of mentally ill people can seem normal despite their illness and they can learn to live with their illness and function normally.

mental disorders like bi-polar, depression., anxiety disorder and ocd, ect. can not be cured !!! however they can be treated and stabilized with different therapy techniques and/or medications. and yes people with these disorders who are treated correctly can go on to "normal" happy and full lives !!! i have re-occurring major depression and i have been stable since 1997 and have a wonderful life !! good luck.
