The five most widely produced cheese varieties in the USA are Mozzarella, Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Swiss and Provolone. Only one variety of these five are indigenous to the USA however and that is Monerey Jack. Mozzarella originated in Italy as did Provolone. Cheddar is an English variety while Swiss originated in Switzerland but there is a Scandinavian variety as well known as Jarlsberg, I believe it originated in Finland.
