why are saucepans called saucepans when they are used mainly for boiling veg?

'Cos they shouldn't really be called saucepans! A saucepan is for making sauce, is relatively small and has a lip so you can pour the sauce. Other pans used for boiling are not saucepans, I'm not sure what they are called. Boiling pans? Just pans?

I guess they are the pan you'd use for sauce making - many people make sauces. Anglo-Saxon cooking never really evolved beyond boiled turnips, but we can buy Dolmio, which we might warm up in a sauce pan.

double boiler or steamer is the right way to cook vegtables, lock all the good tast & nutriance, saucepans are to make sauces in to put on ur veggies

Because they were initially meant to be used for simmering sauces. Stock pots were meant for meat stock...but we still boil our spaghetti in them. Frying pans were meant to be used for frying...but we still simmer boxed dinners in them. Veggies are supposed to be cooked in a steamer...but unless you're a culinary chef or you're really that much into cooking...it doesn't matter what kind of pots and pots we use...as long as the food gets cooked.

I make sauce in mine, curry, bolognese, gravy, white, butter, mushroom etc. I also call them pots and all, but not kettles - I'm not that much of a hypocrit!
