As far as I know assalamualaikum is the Arabic counterpart of alaichem shalom in hebrew.
Salamunalaikum is the counterpart of shalom alaichem.
And they are used in greeting someone. But the first person says salamunalaikum and the other replies assalamunalikum. Same with shalom aleichim/aleichim shalom.
Selam means hi, salute. Alaikum means something like "to you". Again same for shalom and alecihim.

like salam means hi in farsi
shalom means hi in hebrew (it also means peace)
and assalumualaikum is in arabic
see how "salam" is the root word in the arabic word.
