IF you are seeing worms they are not heartworm. Heartworms live in the heart and lung vessels and can only be detected with a blood test. Sounds like intestinal parasites to me, which in some cases can cause death in puppies/kittens. See your vet, as they will be able to identify the worms and give the proper medication

If not treated, yes. However, treatment is possible and most often successful if the disease has not progressed too far.
The first step is to evaluate the dog and treat any secondary problems of heart failure or liver/kidney insufficiency so that he/she can withstand the treatment. The next step is to kill the adult worms with an arsenic compound. Vets have access to a Immiticide(3), a fairly new compound that has fewer side effects than the previous drug and is safer for dogs with more severe infestations.
The treatment is administered in two doses each day for two days, followed by several weeks of inactivity to give the dog’s system a chance to absorb the dead worms. Exertion can cause the dead worms to dislodge, travel to the lungs, and cause death.
At least three-to-four weeks after the administration of the drug to kill the adult worms, further treatment to kill the microfilariae is needed. The dog is dosed daily for a week, then the blood test is repeated. If microfilariae are still present, the dose can be increased. Follow-up studies should be done in a year.
Surgical removal of the adult heartworms is possible and may be indicated in advanced cases with heart involvement.
Hope this helps!

Heartworm disease is a serious condition which can lead to death if it doesn't get treated.I suppose that, given the fact you know she has heartworms, you went to a vet,did all the necessary examinations(blood tests etc) and began a treatment. If you discovered it soon enough(which is probably the case, given the fact she is a puppy and you say "small heartworms") with the right treatment your dog will be just fine! But listen to your vet, don't neglect the treatment and take good care of your puppy from now on(right food, enough rest,no stress etc)

a puppy should not have heartworms - are you sure that is what you are referring to? If it is indeed heartworms, you can get that treated by the vet, if it's only slight, you can treat with giving your dog heartguard - don't give it any other type of heartworm medicine if it is positive for heartworms, as it will kill her. Just follow your vets advice, and your pup will be fine. And keep her on the monthly heartworm preventative so she does not get re infested

I just went through the same thing. The vet had me get medication and I had to give it to her on a day when I could be home with her at least 8 hours and when the vet was in her office all day. She said that this was because 4% of all dogs with a positive for heartworms, have an allergic reaction to the Heartguard (thats what I think it was) and that I had to watch her for signs of an allergic reaction, cause that would kill her if I didnt catch it in time and take her to the vet office immediatly. You can treat them, just get this pill and she will be fine.

how do you know she has heartworms if you didn't go to a vet?? Heartworms are transmitted via mozzies and can not be seen just by looking at the dog.
Return to the vet and ask what can be done.

Get the dog to the vet PRONTO and get heartworm meds. Normally the vet will give you a supply of PREVENTITIVE heart worm pills. These keep your dog from getting heart worm. Now that your pooch has them, they'll need to be treated with other meds first. Get that dog to the vet!

Unfortunately, if a dog gets heartworms and is not treated, it is fatal. It is very expensive to treat heartworms. But, she can be treated. Get her to the vet as soon as possible. You can not treat heartworms yourself, the vet must do it.

If it's in the early stages, you can get treatment at the vet, which may or may not be successful. If you keep waiting, your puppy will develope a bad cough, the white in their eyes will turn yellow and the pupply will slowly die painfully

Take the puppy to the vet immediately. This can be treated and cured. Otherwise, yes she will die
