I think "Beccy C" is on the right track. I think the sound helps attract them to want to chew on them. My cat does the exact same thing. Some of the people's responses are so rude, but they don't understand that you see the cat chewing on the bag, you put the bag away and there's always another bag that the cat will see later and chew on--it's really not likely that you take out all your plastic bags and sit there while you let the cat have at it after you see her/him do it. I don't know why they are so hostile to you, but there are people who sincerely want to answer your question. It's just you always have to watch the cat because the cat is drawn to any plastic bag you bring home, right? I'll go to the market-set the bag down and the silly cat will start munching right away! I pull her away but she fights me to get at it until I manage to hide it a few minutes later. And it's over and over, right? That's what happens to me...I think that they like the feeling of chewing it and they like the sound it makes. I don't know for sure but my cat goes for plastic bags like she's trying to get her fix, you know? I think if you spray lemon fragrance (like lemon smelling air freshner, lemon and water, or anything similar) that your cat may be detoured. You can just spray plastic bags with the lemon for a while and maybe your cat will get over the plastic bag craze. :) I started the other day and it seems to be working. I had heard that it detoured cats from peeing where they shouldn't because the lemon scent bothers them--not enough to hurt them-but to annoy them away from the spot. So I hope that helps...

My cat does the same thing. Its a disorder called pica. People get it as well (think about people that chew on pens). I think they do it at first to get attention, then they just like it. I have to put plastic bags away as soon as I get them home. My cat finds plastic if it is anywhere, so I just have to be careful. It is VERY dangerous and can cause bowel obstructions.

You must put a stop to this; if they twist in her intestine she will die an agonising death. Make very sure all plastic bags and wrappings are disposed of immediately; your cat obviously enjoys the rustle and the taste- she doesnt know they can be a death warrant to most animals/

easiest way is to make sure you don't have any plastic bags laying around. pick them up and throw them out in a garbage can that is out of where the cat can get it. like under a sink, in a cabinet, in the bathroom or a room that can be closed off.

I don't know why she does it, but she shouldn't. Make sure all bags are where she can't get at them, otherwise she could suffocate herself, or end up with the plastic wrapped in her intestines, which could mean either huge vet bills or a dead kitty, possibly both!

Chances are its to aid digestion. Its probably not the best thing for her. Does you cat have regular access to long grass as this is what they usually use as a digestion aid. if not it could be this that's causing the problem. If you cant let her out or if there's no grass around buy a pot of kitty grass from the local pet store. We do this in winter for our cat and she is very happy with it

I don't know why but one of my cats does the same to the point of obsession. He will open cupboard doors to get at them and climb in difficult places to get to them. I thought that it was because he wanted to destroy them as both my cats were rescued having been found in a bin bag.
