Several years ago, admittedly before terrorism had become quite such a serious threat as it is today, I returned from Barcelona airport with a fossil in my hand luggage, as I thought it was too fragile to go in the hold. It was in a slab of rock about the size of a large dinner plate, wrapped in some clothes. I saw it go through the x-ray machine as a mysterious opaque black blob that was surely worthy of investigation? However, as both machine operators were engrossed in conversation, they were not watching the screens, and so didn't see it.
Several weeks after 7/11, I got my nail scissors confiscated at Gatwick.
Anyone with similar experiences?

Again - Please I'm not asking about (or encouraging) anything dangerous or illegal! The question concerns the effectiveness of the procedures, thats all.

lol 7/11... Yeah i had this fake hand that i was going to use as a joke on my friends when i got off the plane. (I was going to pretend i got stuck in the car door). Anyway.. I forgot i had it on my carry-on bag. Security pulled me aside and held me there for 10 minutes before they told me why. They never opened my bag until they asked me to do it myself.. They really thought i was some crazed lunatic with a severed hand in my backpack.

I've known a mate to smuggle a polish bayonet through, but it was in a military flight in a sealed security container, so no rules were broken.
I have a wash kit utility box, that has scissors, nail clippers, syringe needle (blister popper) and razor in it. It's a small metal box about the size of a large *** packet. Thing is, as it's metal, I expected it to be confiscated. It was ignored.

couple of years ago I went up to Scotland for Christmas. I had bought my boyfriend an authentic Freddy Kreuger glove for Xmas which was in my luggage. About ten mins after I checked in, I got a call over the tannoy to return to security. When I got therem you got clearly see the hand and claws on the screen and about 20 nerdy guys had gathered round! they had worked out what it was and wanted to see it and only disappeared when I opened m,y suitcase to prove that I had already wrapped it up .... they were very disappointed!!

I accidently had a large pair of scissors in my hand luggage when I went from Heathrow to Nepal less than 2 mths after 9-11 and they did not spot until my stuff got checked again in Bangladesh where they questioned me about them. When I told them I had come from Heathrow and they had not been bothered they let me keep them!

I had a tiny key ring penknife taken from me at LHR, but I have brought in a couple of bayonets from the Yemen, but that was in hold luggage so not a threat and presumably not illegal.
I have brought in many cigarettes from the mideast, again in hold luggage, and the odd bit of cannabis.

Must have a government issued picture ID. Delta has a no ID no Fly policy. Other airlines may accept a socail sercurity card along with other offical documentation (birth certificate) but they will ensure you go through secondary screening at the checkpoint. I would definatly contact to airline your flying and ask them, because different airlines have different policies.

Yes, my step-son. Seriously though: flying from Basel to the UK when my youngest daughter was in a Punk phase. Basel Airport is actually in France and the police saw her coming, 'Oh là là!' one of them said. She went through the metal detector. Beep! Took her belt off. Beep! Removed her many bracelets. Beep! At this point her sister said to me, 'Let's hope she hasn't got studs on her panties!' Kids can be so embarrassing! Anyway. we made the flight.
