A serial killer kills one person at the time, a mass murderer goes out on a killing spree and kills more people in one session.

Mass killer- going postal, killing 3 or more people in an area with little time interval
Spree killer- someone who kills 3 or more with time in between deaths, but related in cause
Serial killer:
no agreed upon definition
some definitions:
(1912) FBI: Serial Homicide is 3 or more separate events in 3 or more separate locations with an emotional cooling off period in between homicides
significant motivator is sexual
not pragmatic
(1984) Egger: significant role played by fantasy, intrinsic eternal need which is not by financial gain or pragmatic ends
(1997) Hickey:disregards motive, all offenders who through premeditation killed 3 or more victims over a period of days, weeks, months, years
no motive
(2003) Ferguson: 3 or more victims, killing of victims somehow pleasurable to the offender as it was consistent with the offenders internal set of values. The attacks did not fill only functional purposes

Well take 9/11 for intance that was mass murder, jack the ripper was a serial killer he killer loads of people but just one at a time..
