The idea of an eternity spent in the flaming fires of an eternal lake of burning sulfer is NOT of the Bible. That is a Catholic discription of hell.

Hell is an anglo-saxon word that means "hole" or "to hide". Hel is also the name of the Norse god, not very liked, of the underworld.Where did we get our modern day version of Hell? Return to the 13th century, to the Roman Catholic Church right before the Reformation, to the period of time called the Romantics or Middle Ages where if you were to be anyone in the vicinty of Europe you must be occupied by music, art, poetics, politics, religion or science or some such other endeavor. Dante Alighieri wrote Inferno, published in the year 1300 and as depicted by many artists is the source for our main visual concept of a place that contains all of the souls of the damned that burn for eternity. However, scripture will prove that this is a man made concept.

Encarta:

1. place of punishment after death: according to many religions, the place where the souls of people who are damned suffer eternal punishment after death
2. devilish power: according to some religions, Satan or the powers of evil that live in hell
3. underworld: according to some religions, the place where the spirits of all people go after death
4. suffering: a state or place of extreme pain or misery, or something or somebody that causes extreme pain or misery

Hell as translated from the Hebrew word for Sheol: It is used about 65 times yet even the King James Version of the Bible translates this word 31 of these times to mean grave or pit. Sheol literally means to "go down" or be "brought down" as in to be laid low and then covered over and has been used to describe darkness, depths, in the waves of a flood, the deep, the abyss and is used to describe the furtherest place from heaven. In effect it is death. It is also a place of permenance. That is until, of course, Christ concured the grave and rose for us.The three Greek words that are often translated from Sheol are Hades (Hades was a greek god of the underworld and completely pagan), Gehenna (means place of burning and was a literal place, a garbage dump in the Hinnom Valley, a ravine right outside of Jerusalem where at one time pagan gods had been worshipped) and Tartaroo (this is the origin of the Latin term for torture or torment, yet used one time in scripture in 2 Peter 2:4 to describe a subterrainian (sp?) place, dark and deep, but this one time in scripture specifically as a place to put rebellious angels or demons ie...the pit which is where demons fear to go as was stated at the confrontation of Christ with the "legion" of demons Matt 8:29-32 KJV cuz I would imagine that once you go there you don't get to come back out). It might be difficult to fathom but...we as Christians must go back to Christs time and transend the falacies handed to us by our forefathers in the early church...why? Because these lies detract from the Glory of Christ Jesus and blind us to the truth of the Scriptures so that we form scales on our eyelids so as not to see that our God is not a God that would torture and punish for eternity for crimes of selfishness, waste and wickedness in finite world. It is not just. However, the single punishment will be for those that are lost...those that have been ensnared to be resurrected to live again on Judgement day and recieve the wages of sin...death. The absense of life. They will cease to exist. "Be gone from me.."He will say.."I never knew you." To those that have been called and answered...they will hear "Well done, my good and faithful servant." I hope and pray that I'm worthy to hear these words on that day. Yet my Hope is in Him.Love in Christ, Jana ;0) <><

P.S. to continue real quick lets define death according to the Bible...

per•ish [ pérrish ]

intransitive verb

1. die: to die, e.g. because of harsh conditions or an accident
2. disappear: to come to an end or cease to exist ( formal

Hebrew word....karath....means the same thing or literally translates to "cut off" or also...abad...like as in the name Abaddon of Revelation 9:11 which means Destroyer....which means "to destroy" or "ruin". There is also another word in Hebrew used where perish has been translated...caphah..means to be "swept away" or "consumed". Where ever you find the word perish in scripture it has one of these three original meanings which all mean the same thing essentially. Now there are two types of perishing...there is the perishing where you die in this life (unless Jesus comes back first) where you go down into the grave and the perished, or dead, will experiance resurrection to eternal life or be resurrected to the "second death". Everything not of God will be consumed in a consuming fire (Hebrews 12: 29 For our God is a consuming fire.) and all that will be left? Smoke. What does smoke do? Rises and dissapates into the atmosphere. He was an Eternal Fire for Sodom and Gomorah (Jude 1:7), and that smoke ascended up but those fires are not still buring....yet the smoke...it went somewhere...Luke 17:29,30 and 2 Peter 2:6.
Rev 2:11
11He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
Revelation 20:6
6Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
Revelation 20
14And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Revelation 21:8
8But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Psalm 37:20
20But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.
Psalm 68:2
2As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

Isaiah 51:6
6Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.
Hosea 13
3Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.
Revelation 14
9And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
10The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
11And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
Psalm 112:10
10The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.
Isaiah 26
13O LORD our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us: but by thee only will we make mention of thy name.
14They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.
15Thou hast increased the nation, O LORD, thou hast increased the nation: thou art glorified: thou hadst removed it far unto all the ends of the earth.
16LORD, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer when thy chastening was upon them.
17Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O LORD.
18We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
19Thy (meaning the ones belonging to Him)dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.
20Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.
21For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.
Isaiah 41:11
Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish.
Isaiah 60:12
12For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.
John 3
13And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

God does not lie. His Word is True. There is only One Truth. I believe that. From the Word of God you see abounding love, tender mercy, grace and forgiveness and acceptance of all who would recieve it. As well we are given ample warning..when this life is over you have a choice...everlasting life..or everlasting death. I believe people fear this more than the "proverbial hell". I also believe that this "threat" of hell has been a template used and passed on over the centeries to "scare" people into being saved. You see there is no such coersion (sorry, spelling is atrocious). God loves us and wants nothing less for us to dwell in His house forever incorruptable. In order to provide that He must abolish sin and death and the knowledge of it from ever occuring again but He won't force anyone. Love in Christ, Jana <>< :0)

First Hell is a state the place a individual makes a unsleeping decision to chop up themselves from God. It’s no longer a place of Mediaeval situations the place some lusty beast torments defective fools for making errors. Milton favored the belief of hell because of the fact it basically sounds greater exciting then singing alleluias to our writer God for a run of the mill eternity. Hell is usually a greater proper tale then an enduring state of being gob (or God) smacked. There are no words that even hint at Heaven because of the fact it’s previous human experience. Aquinas made that sparkling. Hell we are able to think of, we’ve all been there.

WE DO NOT GO TO HEAVEN, GOING TO HEAVEN IS A LIE, A TRADITION OF MEN.
Joh 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
Joh 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
Joh 13:3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
1ti 6:15 Which in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
1ti 6:16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
Joh 6:46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
1jo 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
1jo 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
BUT WHAT IS PROMISED BY GOD IS SO MUCH MORE EXCELENT AND GREAT THAN LOFTING UP TO HEAVEN

WHERE DO WE FIT INTO THIS PICTURE?
The Bible makes it perfectly clear that all who accept God's offer of mercy and salvation through His Son Jesus Christ will inherit and inhabit the new universe for His pleasure, glory, and the expansion of His Divine Family. We shall be kings and priests ruling under Jesus Christ (Revelation 1:6; 5:10). How awesome! Are you willing to accept that fact? It is speculated by some that the entire universe will one day teem with life and the redeemed of the Lord will inhabit it.
"And He that sat upon the throne said, 'Behold, I make all things new.' And He said unto me, 'Write: for these words are true and faithful.' And He said unto me, 'It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son'" (Revelation 21:57).
1jo 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1jo 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
Ga 4:5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
Ga 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
Ga 4:7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
Ro 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Ro 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Ro 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
Ro 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Ro 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
Ro 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
Re 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
Re 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
Re 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
Re 2:28 And I will give him the morning star.
Joh 17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him
I affirm not only belief in God the Father and in Jesus Christ as Creator, Designer, and Lifegiver, but in the Holy Bible as the inspired revelation of Almighty God (Psalm 12:6,7; 119:89; 2 Timothy 3:16). You must now choose whom you will believe and obey: the speculations, ideas, and theories of menor the inspired Word of God. MY earnest prayer is that the Lord God of Israel, the Almighty Creator of the infinite universe, will grant you wisdom to make the correct decision and the faith to believe and obey His Word.
