There is a predictable pattern in all abusive relationships. I don't remember the exact terminology, but here is the summary:

Abusive Phase - He is verbally/mentally/physically abusive. This is usually short term, and can be caused by a breaking point, but usually the trigger is very minor, such as a minor disagreement that he quickly escalates, but it is also severe, and gets worse as the relationship progresses.

Depression Stage - He feels guilt for what he has done, but will still blame you for it while he is feeling sorry for himself. He feels that everything is going wrong for him and that you don't do anything to make it better, and you may in fact be making it worse, and that you make him do the things he does.

Apologetic Stage - He realizes he may lose you, and can't stand that fact because he does genuinely care for you in his own way, and so will apologize and promise never to do it again, and claim that he was having a bad day, bad week, bad month etc. and that it had nothing to do with you. He'll do anything he can to make you forgive him.

Honeymoon Phase - Trying to prove his resolve, he will treat you extremely good for the next little bit, as a way to show you that you made the "right choice" by staying with him. He is afraid of losing you, because he's worried he will not be able to get anyone better. This often involves gifts, dates etc. He is trying to make you forget about his mistake

Controlling Stage - While all of the above are methods of him trying to assert control over you, the controlling stage is after the honeymoon stage, where he again tries to begin controlling where you go, what you do and how you do it. This is the stage that usually leads up to the conflict that initiates the Abusive Stage. This stage is usually the longest stage.

If this looks familiar, the only way to break the cycle is to get out of the relationship, and do NOT take him back, no matter what he says or does to convince you he's changed.

get a bigger boyfriend and then call your old one to your house. When you see him pull in the driveway, start performing oral on your new one, this will piss him off. As a guy he will naturally think to kick your new boyfriends behind, but your new one is bigger and will kick your old ones behind.

Leave. I know it's hard, but I went through that. I didn't get the nerve to leave until the children started getting beat as well. Women die everyday from abusive men. Please get help and get out.
