You would get practical knowledge by working with microwave equipment for 2 or more years. There is so much to know and you seem to understand that it's not all in books.

read some physics, look into particle theory of light. that's all about microwaves and radar. with radar it's good to look into reletivity, especialy dopler effect in light.
