Meditation helps a person discipline their mind. People not only can become out of shape physically but their minds can become flabby too. A symptom of an undisciplined mind is when you can't turn the dialog in your mind off to go to sleep, can't concentrate when you are awake, and have a short attention span. Once the mind is under control, THEN all manner of insight and revelation can come to the meditator.
I used to sit and meditate until I got my mind under control, now I like what's called walking meditation. That way I can exercise my body and mind simultaneously.
