It is not dangerous at all. All the people saying that it is, need to do their research.
Some doctors, however, reccomend waiting until after the 12th week. I don't know why, but as a pregnant cosmetologist it is just something I have heard. I have a friend who dyes her hair religiously even when pregnant, before 12 weeks and her baby was fine.
Hair dye does not cause cancer....where do you people come up with this stuff?

No - it's not safe to die your hair when you're pregnant. Especially in the early months.

There is absolutely NOTHING unsafe about colouring hair during pregnancy. I know plenty of people who coloured their hair whilst they were pregnant (including myself) and we are all still alive, with happy, healthy children!
The only warning is that because of hormonal changes caused by pregnancy, the colour may not turn out exactly the shade your sister expects. Tell her to do a strand test first.

If you look for hair dyes that are amonia free it should be alright...failing that in most health food shops you should be able to pick up herbal hair dyes that are chemical free which are usually used for people who have allergies or sensitive skin. Its one of those grey areas of pregnancy some people say its ok as long as you aren't blonding your hair where as others state that you shouldn't at all....but hey look at Brittney Spears she manages to change her hair color on a regular basis throughout her pregnacies the first one notably blonding frequently (not saying she is a good role model though :)

While the dye itself would not harm the baby, the chemical fumes can. While there is a chance that it won't, there is also the chance that it can. It is advisable not to dye her hair until afterwards... plus since she's pregnant her hair might change slightly anyway.

My sis was just pregnant 5 months ago and she was just desperate to dye her hair, but apparently cos your hair changes the colour might come out funny, and its very unlikely to hold

The hair dyes they use in the 70s was known to cause problems with pregnancy and also types of lymphoma cancer. Todays MIGHT be different. She should really research it.
