When you leave the tea bag in for too long, a dark brown scum appears on top of the water.....some people say it's the glue from the tea bag, some people tell me it's the tannin in the tea. Does anyone know?

A scientific study concluded that tea scum was caused by hard water ,endemic in London. The study suggested that adding a bit of lemon juice would cure the problem - and conversely, that the addition of milk increased scum. Nonetheless, the people were aghast -- adding lemon just to reduce tea scum was just not worth the effort and change of habit involved. The British are a traditional people. If tea scum was good enough for grandma, it will be good enough for me.

it is definitely not glue! it is the chemicals from the tea mixing with the impure water you drink to form that scum thing... it is most likely a form of chemical salt that is neutral on pH value.

Not the glue. Same thing happens if you use just the tea.
