Nobody ever expects a roundhouse kick to the back of the knees. Trust me I've used it and it takes down people no matter how big they are - their legs just buckle. Feint a left punch and take 'em down with the kick. If they can't stand they can't fight.

I am going to divide the techniques into two: those that are effective in the striking range, and those that can be used in grappling siutations.

In a real life-threatening situation, if the other guy has not managed to grab you, the top three targets to consider are:

1. eyes
2. throat
3. knees

A successful attack on any of these targets will stop an opponent no matter how strong he is, or how high his pain tolerance may be. You might be the strongest SOB in the world, but it won't do you much good if you can't see. Or if you can't breathe. Or if you can't walk.

Eye gauging is commonly done with your fingers. A shot to the throat can be done a number of ways. A side kick is probably most effective for the knee.

The difficulty, however, is that these targets are not that easy to hit on a moving opponent. In the case of the knees and throat, if the other guy is bulky and strong, you would have to hit at exactly the right point for your attack to be effective. And you are not likely to have second chances.

So there is a fourth target that you should keep in mind, and it's the always popular kick to the groin. A front kick is likely the most direct approach, and even if your aim is slightly off, the other guy's legs act as natural guides for your foot to go where it has to go. The groin is definitely easier to hit than the above three targets.

But I personally have seen a guy take a clean kick to the groin, and not go down. Unlike with the previous three targets, if your opponent is too strong, or if he is too high on drugs to feel any pain, kicking him in the privates may not do much good.

If your opponent manages to grab you, the situation gets much more dire, but you should not give up. You may still get in an eye gauge or a knee to the groin.

In a grappling siutation, two effective methods to keep in mind are breaking the fingers and biting. Both require you to stay calm and manouever yourself to a position where you may be able to do one of these things. Both also require you to be decisive. If you are going to wrench the guy's pinky, do it to break it. Similarly, when biting the guy, bite hard enouigh to take a chunk of him away in your mouth. No holding back and no hesitation. This may sound gross, but consider the situation in which you are placed.

But again, if your opponent's tolerance for pain is extremely high, these techniques may not render him ineffective by themselves.

So in the end, there are no techniques that are guaranteed to work. But if you have to act quickly to get out of a dangerous situation, your best bet probably is to focus on the above targets and techniques. Most importantly, do not give up. Even if you cannot act immediately (if he has a gun pointed at you, for example) keep your mind focused and alert to any opportunities for attack and/or escape.

I am not going to cover what other people have said (although i noticed a few deadly strikes not labeled as such, including the palm to nose strike, it can kill almost instantly with too much force) but i would like to add a new strike to the list. A move that is often forgotten but is a staple of any good martial artist.

The finger break.

The average attacker of either gender is going to have fingers, and odds are, if you can avoid the first few lunges, they will get frustrated and start flailing their hands trying to grab you. All you have to do is get ahold of one finger, and you can control the biggest opponent. No human on earth can resist a quick snapping of their pinky if you use both hands. Once you take one finger, the shock will temporarily immobilize them, and then you can start taking other fingers until they run away. No one can throw any hand strikes if all their fingers are broken.

Finally, if they still insist on fighting after all this (legs only, obviously), then you avoid their legs, and use the incredible pain now residing in their fingers to ground them, and knock their @$$ out with a kick to the side of the head (not temple, or you will wind yourself up in prison with a murder rap).

Kind of depends on the situation. You probably want to go with the krav maga/ special forces approach of hitting two from three vulnerable areas on the meridian line. Eyes, throat and genitals.

It's hard to fight blind, nearly impossible to fight after a good strike to the sweet spot and impossible to do anything if you're not breathing.

The choice of stike just has to be effective, so play to your own strengths; if you're not flexible, don't go for kicks, if you're not that strong, go for elbows and knees instead of punches and kicks, if you're a bit squeemish then you're not going to pull off a good eye gouge...

Whatever you do, wait for the opening and go in full on. Do not hold back and do not stop until you are sure you have incapacitated your quarry.

Not a martial artsy person myself, but friend is very experienced and says the following - palm of hand upwards into nose (incredibly painful, eyes immediately fill with water) or strike to carotid artery with side of hand. He does warn the last one is potentially fatal and not to do it.

Personally I'd really rather not injure someone unless I'm in danger and running isn't an option.

A quick punch to the throat, ten a kick to the groin, followed by an elbow to the back of the head (as he's bent over grabbing his throat and nuts)
This will take the biggest guy down fast.
If he's too big for you to reach his throat then start with a knee kick to bring him down closer to you.

Elbow to the temple or high kick to the jaw.

I wouldnt use anything if you are not fully trained because if you miss you may get an *** kicking.

Big man use words, little men use anger and fists.
