an inside joke is a private joke that only the people who it passes between can understand. it relates to something they alone have shared.

an inside joke is something two people find humor in based upon a past experience.. something privately shared ..no one else would understand the joke unless they knew the past experience that makes others find the joke funny.

It's one that makes sense to only a group of people who understand the circumstances in which the joke came about.

For example if at work you call someone a name because of something they've done - only you and your colleagues are going to know why it's funny.
