There are tons of good sites. Depending on which branch of your family, and their origins.

The LDS site has a family research section. The Later Day Saints are really into genealogy, and keep excellent records.

Cyndislist will take you to other sites, it is a directory of directories.

There are Ellis Island, there are ships manifests (how people came to US, or went elsewhere). Some of the best sites are in the states where people were married, died, born, or had deeds or probate. Obits are a great source of information.

The idea that a Coat of Arms can tell you anything is not really a good one. You may discover something about one branch of your family, but you will neglect the thousands of others.

I recommend starting at the base of your family tree, and draw it out. Or use something like Family Tree Maker ($29.00). This excellent tool has a search feature, which is great for beginning, not so good when you get 10 generations out because there are too many false responses.

Beware of peoples trees on the Internet. Unless you have proof, you may be barking up the wrong tree, so to speak. Hope this helps.

Myfamily.com is a great place. You have to pay for a site, though. You can input your entire family tree, and on the tree it will actually show how many close matches they found for it. Just click and look. A basic site costs $30, and you can have pictures, chat, instant message, multiple trees, recipes, filebox, and just about anything else you want. You can invite family members to the site, and keep in touch. I've found a very close relative this way, my grandmothers' cousin (which is close genealogically), and been contacted by quite a few other relatives not so close. So, try this site.

There are 2 sites from the LDS (Mormon) chruch:

http://www.familysearch.org and the home page for the Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah: http://www.lds.org/placestovisit/location/0,10634,1869-1-1-1,00.html .

Both sites are free to use, and in addition to this, many Mormon meetinghouses have Family History Centers in them, and they are free to the public and you don't have to be a Mormon to use the services there. I know my meetinghouse has a Family History room and there are subscritptions to Ancestry and Geneology.com which anyone is free to use.

Good luck with all.

There is a mormon site which was recommended to me which I have to say was really good, the mormons have collected family histories from all over the word going back hundreds of years. You don't need to be a mormon to access their sites but unfortunately I can't acces their address at the moment. I know it had "Family search" in it somewhere
