I did a transpacific flight. I don't know what she went through in cargo, but she was OK when we got to LA (from Taiwan).

I didn't give her tranquilizers. I suspect it would just add to the weirdness for the dog. I watched my cats come out of anesthesia when they were spayed and neutered, and they did not take it well.

I have done it several time, anything from a cat to a 150 pound dog. They did just fine. A little upset when they got out, but no harm done. Do not give tranquilizers, unless the dog is really neurotic.
