The ideas of "good" and "bad" originated from the bible, so if you want to be a "good" person I suggest you follow it.
for example, you have the Ten Commandments, the "golden rule", turn the other cheek, the Sermon on the Mount, etc. Those are things people naturally follow because we've been taught those things since the beginning of time.
The bible teaches all of these.
Otherwise, if man came from snails in a mud hole and then to monkeys, or whatever, then how would we know the difference between good and bad? Monkeys don't know a difference, they only know instinct and what man teaches them.
So where did mankind learn good from bad? Why is there a difference? Why is doing something bad virsus another thing that is good? Who decided this anyway?

And who are we, being only human, to decide what is good and what is bad, anyway?

You get where I'm coming from?

Without the bible and prophets and all the holy teachings they've ever and will ever give us we would not know what was good and what was bad and where to follow for truth and good.
One more point: we were all born with the "light of Christ" to tell the difference between good and bad:
When we steal for the first time we feel "bad" and "guilty" because of two reasons: 1. we FEEL it's wrong 2. we're afraid to get caught.

If we were the first person to ever steal, and it never was a law made against it yet (not yet needed to be one), we would still feel it is wrong, and those it affects would know it was wrong because of the type of consequences this choice would make.

Pretty much, I believe if you're a humanist or an athiest or both, you can explain yourself out of all of this. Because who is man to decide what is good and what is bad? We are agents to ourselves and therefore have a choice to choose what we want to do, right? So what makes this choice bad vs this choice to being good? Like, stealing something can also be termed as "good" because it can help someone else out. Like look at Robin Hood. He stole from the rich to give to the poor. He did not think what he was doing was bad, but only ran because he was afraid to get caught. So, why is stealing bad? Why is murder bad? Why is anything bad or good? It had to have come from somewhere......

If the Bible was a requirement for being a good person, then that means there were no good people before the Bible was written, which means everyone in the Bible was a bad person, and everyone who has never read the Bible (including most christians) are bad people too.

No, you don't need the bible to be a good person. Some of the good things in the bible can help guide you to being a good person, but most of them you can get from other sources anyway (like the golden rule, which was written by confucious around 500BC).

The point of the Bible is the story of "redemption". It is God's explanation of history, how man fell from his relationship to God through sin, and how God is bringing man back into fellowship with Himself. This story explains how sin brought about death as the payment or result of sin. For man to be in fellowship with God that payment must be met, but since man has sinned his own death can only pay for his own sins and so it was necessary for God to send a perfect man, His Son, to die and make that perfect payment. Now through faith in that Son, man can be restored to fellowship with God for eternity as Adam was before he sinned.
Without this information received from God, man is without hope. Personally I think that is a major point presented by the Bible - Eternal life or eternal death.
Yes it is necessary for being a good person because with out it you would not even know what good or evil were.

To guide, strengthen, correct, and nuture new, growing, and fallen Christians and everyone else on the planet. It's God's very own word given to man so that God speaks to us and tells us His will. The outline for salvation, how a Christian and society should act and live is there, judicial, moral, and social issues are discussed and answered. The history of mankind, earth, Jesus, the early church, all the major events of humanity, and the plan for the final days of both man and earth are there in plain view. Take the time to read thru it with an open mind and open your heart to God, you might be surprised.

I noticed that there are much, much more people on yahoo answers who are desperately trying to deny existence of God than those who actually try to defend their religious stand. Here’s my opinion:
People simply love to worship things instead of being free like the birds.
Something changed in the year of 175 because since that year they stopped killing Christians. Priests at that time hid some facts from people in order to please authorities hungry for ruling and to put themselves in better material position. Jesus said that only those whose heart is not hardened in sin can understand, meaning only those who don’t look at the world via material prism can understand this faith. De Vinci’s Code is work of a pure atheist who is thinking purely materialistically but who gave some correct points about the Church. Real Christians are not wearing long shiny dresses and golden Crosses. They live among us as modest, common citizens; those that you meet once in life but you memorize them immediately because something about them is so pleasant and kind. They are those that are happily whistling in a large queue at the supermarket or patiently wait for you to move your car without pointing the finger because they have peace and they are free of all obsessions and they enjoy in every minute without any fears because they discovered God. 10 commandments are for our sake, not for the sake of somebody who felt powerful when bringing them. If someone doesn’t understand this faith, he should look in his heart and see if he is actually a good person. It is not possible to buy the stairways to heaven or to cash out for your sins. Tell me if it’s easy to refuse a well paid job over a small time business that gives you opportunity to watch your children grow and have enough money only for basic standards. Many of our fathers did. That is why I’m happy and don’t need drugs. If some one is not strong enough to take the path of Christianity he should think again when he wants to judge others who are.

the total focal point of the bible is that God created this world and gave eternal life to man. the free gift of God is eternal life & we rejected it as did our parents in the Garden of Eden.

why did God create us is that God wanted to have fellowship, a relationship with us. Just like a father has feelings for his chidren & children have feelings for him.

it is the battle between knowledge of Good & evil and we who have lived in this world from 6000 years of the history of the world know the best about evil things.

it is about the creator who is Jealous because his children donot call him father but worship the things of the world.

and above that he sent his only begotton son whom we crucified & even today we drive nails through his body by our words & sins.

It is a document that was created and manipulated to further the political and personal ambitions of religious leaders, and thereby maintain their power, wealth and prestige. Following the Bible would be amoral, and anathema to being a good person.

No. Being a good person will never get you into Heaven on it's own. You need to first give your life to Jesus Christ, then and only then will the power of God's Word transform your heart and your life. People always seek power, why not try where the only true power is found? You know you want to.
