What do you think of the new 'Thumbs up / thumbs down' function on yahoo answers?

Will it hurt anyone's feelings?
What should be the etiquette for using it? . When should I give a thumbs down?

No, I don't think it's rude to give an answer a thumbs down rate if you feel the answer really deserves that. I give thumbs down to rude answers and answers that are totally irrelevant or clearly just someone fishing two points for no content. I give thumbs up for answers that are very good. When answers aren't really that good but not that bad either I leave them unrated.

How you go around rating answers is your own choice. I don't see anything wrong with voting for thumbs down if it's your honest opinion that the answer is bad.

It's not rude, in fact, some of these non-spelling, grammatical error-making Answerers need a thumbs down. I hate having to decipher people's questions and answers, that's why they have a "Preview" and "Modify" button BEFORE you submit your question or answer. Even afterwards you can still go back and hit "Edit" if you see a mistake. There's nothing worse than someone winning 10 pts. for Best Answer and it was spelled incorrectly and not well thought out. And some of these questions ought to be deleted automatically when you can't make heads or tails of what the person is asking. If people's feelings get hurt, maybe they'll stop writing dumb answers and put more thought into it. I mean, come on, we're just on here as a cheap form of entertainment, how could your feelings get hurt from some anonymous Yahooer anyway?

Use it as much as you want. It isn't rude to think someone's answer is poorly stated or irrelevant. Same with the question.

Someone just wrote that it is better than all of these extremists pumping the "abuse" button for everything they dislike... that is probably why they put the thumbs up/down in.

I think it's good that we get to rate the questions as well, with the answers I don't find it all that useful, only a when answers are rude or irrelevant.

This is a PUBLIC forum. People who can't handle the public respsonse to their participation shouldn't participate. It's a whole different set of rules from those that would apply to 'polite converstation'.
