Sorrento is absolutely stunning. Although it can be a little expensive, my wife and I did it very cheaply, yet we had the time of our life.
We used Sorrento as a "base camp" and visited Positano after we rented a "Smart Car", Pompeii by train and Capri by boat. Sorrento itself is enough of a romantic place where you can just sit there and enjoy life. There is a little family owned pizzeria called "O Sole Mio" just off of Via degli Aranci at Corso Italia. Lovely pizza made with buffalo mozzarella and make sure to try/buy her home made Limoncello.
As for accomodations, we stayed at Santa Fortunata - Campogaio http://www.santafortunata.com/. Might sound weird, but we stayed in a little camper trailer. It was clean, quiet and quite lovely.
In all, Sorrento was an awesome experience that has been in our thoughts since we left. We dream of going back and doing everything the same way.
Have fun and enjoy "La dolce vita".

Sorrento is gorgeous! There are no traffic lights (at least where I went), so it's always fun to see the Italians driving around, deftly avoiding accidents right and left!
I stayed at the Hotel Tirrenia on Via Capo, overlooking Marina Grande and Capri. I had my own balcony and the room was surprisingly large for a European hotel. The room was all tile, and the bed was a bit smaller than a twin, but I'm sure you can request a king or queen (or their equivalent) for you and your partner. The bathroom was also quite large, though it took me some time to figure out how to operate it and get the water the right temperature!
If you were to head north on Via Capo from Hotel Tirrenia, you would find a Gelateria which has homemade Gelato with a wide variety of flavors ranging from Nocciola to Rosa (Hazelnut to Rose flavored). It is marked by a huge cone of Gelato right outside the door--you can't miss it. There are also many cute stores and even a tiny little supermarket on this road. The people are extremely warm and friendly, and if you speak even a little Italian, they will be ecstatic!
Sorrento is a great choice--don't forget to visit Capri while you're there--it is definitely not a place to be missed.
I have many photos of Capri and Sorrento from my trip, so if you're interested in checking them out, feel free to contact me. If not, that's fine too.
Enjoy Italy--it is such a beautiful country.

I was in Sorrento in April. I had an enjoyable stay, but I was very happy that I only spent two nights there and also added some other Campania cities to my tour. Sorrento is VERY touristy. Everyone speaks English, the prices are high, and tourists outnumber locals 4:1. It's not an authentic Italian experience, but it's a good way to get your feet wet if you're nervous about European travel. Sorrento is well-connected to Naples, Positano, Amalfi, Capri, Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum (mainly by bus and train). In the summer Sorrento is also well-connected to other cities by boats. These boats are cheap, fast and give you great views of the coast. While you're in Campania, considering visiting Paestum. It was the highlight of my trip!
I have a personal website about my time in Sorrento, with lots of photos and recommendations. Check it out at the following link.

Sorrento is a small, but beautiful resort, very nice and clean. You can see the statue of the composer of "O SOLE MIO", the bistro where Carusso did sing for the last time before his death, but let's speak about something more fun. What about the Capri island (it's gorgeous), a trip to Naples and....nothing more since you are together on the Mediteranean coast.

If you only ever go abroad once in your life, go to Italy. Sorrento is lovely. Take a day trip to the Isle of Capri, which is stunning and a drive around the coast to Amalfi.

Sorrento is a very beautiful resort. Very civilized, very Italian!. It's only a short distance from Naples, Vesuvius, and the amazing Roman remains of Pompeii & Herculaneum. Also the Almalfi coastline, which is stunning.
But if you are looking for the sort of place that has English pubs serving beer & chips... forget it! It's not cheap either!
