it is a unit that takes the ac line voltage from your source, puts it through a rectifier of some sort, and produces dc voltage to run a dc motor. there are mant types and to explain the "detailed" version would take some time.

A DC drive is a way of controlling the speed of a dc motor, whether the motor is a permanent magnet motor or a shunt wound motor. The dc drive normally but not always runs off an ac supply. It goes through a rectifier and turns the ac power into dc voltage. With the aid of a potentiometer the motor can be carried in speed. There are two types of dc drive 1) a thyristor type drive that will give a dc voltage output, or 2) PWM (pulse Width Modulation) this dc control offers longer brush life, quieter opertaion and a greater level of torque/horsepower output.

hope this helps.

Permanent Magnet Motors and Servo Motors

A DC drive supplies voltage to the motor to operate at a desired speed. The motor draws current from this power source in proportion to the torque (load) applied to the motor shaft.

your question is unclear and the answers above may not answer it!
DC drive only means you have a "driver" in direct current mode (DC).
"Driver" covers a huge amount of things, from a "car driver" to a "Hardware driver" for your PC, a DC motor driver etc... To many possible answers.
Please, rephrase it and specify.
