I have adopted my dogs from shelters and I really want to start helping dogs. I already have the needed permits but don't know how to go about getting or finding the dogs. The local shelter will only allow you to adopt or to foster dogs on a temporarialy basis. I see many animal rescue groups on pet finder.com just want to know how to get started.

Just wanted to say that I live in a city with a population of about 70,000 and there are no rescue groups here or close by. I do volunteer at the local animal shelter and it breaks my heart seeing good dogs being put to sleep because of lack of space. I just thought I could do more than just donating $ and volunteering.

You could probably contact those groups to ask--there are different rules depending on where you live and what you're trying to rescue. They'd be able to point you in the right direction because they've done it before in your area.

I would say, there are already quite a few established rescue groups out there. If you really want to help animals, the best thing you can do is assist the already existing groups by offering to foster dogs in your home. Most rescue groups are bursting at the seams with to many dogs and not enough homes.

If you have a little spare $$, you could offer to pay for the food and perhaps vet bills of your foster dogs. If not, I think generally the rescue group pays for that and gets reimbursed when dogs are adopted.

The nice thing is, you get to share your home with lots of different dogs as time goes by, and you can help a lot by training them and giving them some manners so they are more desirable to potentional adopters.

It would help if you set up a web site so that you can create public awareness for what you're trying to achieve.

If you invest in a web site and set up all the information and content, you could pull something like that off.

Then you'd want to get sponsors that can support you. It's highly competitive though. You'd most likely want to start on a local level since there are national agencies.

You may also want to consider a way of improving the conditions where you will keep those dogs and make sure that they're in a healthy environment.

By setting up a web site with pictures of the facility you plan to run, it would help you gain more support. People have a lot of ideas, but you really need something visible or tangible that investors and sponsors can see for themselves.

This is so that they can see that you actually have a definitive plan that you can execute and all or most of the resources needed to execute that plan. A lot of people have great ideas and concepts, but that's as far as it goes.

I've been able to develop web sites for myself and have had really good results. Once you register your domain name and set up the content, your business can really take off.

Well, you're going to need a kennel permit, you're going to need lots of space, lots of time and lots of dog food and cat food. This isn't something to be taken lightly- granted, the need is there, however to get something like this up and running is going to take many thousands of dollars. I suggest you apply for a few government grants to ease the money problems first
