A blessing is one person requesting specific graces from God, for appropriate and good use by another.
The "blesser's" level of personal holiness as well as his or her intent has a lot to do with it, too.
The ideal blessing would be from one who was consecrated to God's service by both official ecclesiastical action and personal assent of will, who possesses both priestly authority, and a long track record of service to the poor and others, who has a rich and intimate prayer life with God, and who has, through grace and faith, overcome most, if not all of the serious sin in their own life.
In short, a blessing from someone who already enjoys God's substantial favor, and from someone who has some real "clout" with the Almighty, can work miracles.
Witness all the miracles performed by the prophets and the apostles.
We don't often see nearly the same results today, but with God, grace, and faith, anything remains possible.
Intercessory prayer is another way of obtaining God's blessings, as the saints in heaven meet all of the above qualifications, and then some.

Well, my question is, when people say that-- be they preacher or layman or random on the street, what are they saying? Are they asking God to bless you? Are they telling God to bless you? Are they saying 'God will bless you'? Secondly, with all those things, how can we presume that God will?
If you look around, I don't really see anyone living any more of a blessed life than anyone else, or if they do, it has little to do with how many times people say 'God bless you' in any context to them. Everyone has hardships, no matter the religion. Ultimately, I believe, we make our own blessings, just as we make our own curses. We invoke a higher power to give it more credibility, but ultimately the blessing is not in our stars, but in ourselves.

When God ( or Goddess ) blesses us, most times we expect Wealth, Health, Lovers, Prosperity, Opportunities and Fulfilled Wishes to land on our laps as if by magic... sometimes, I believe God blesses mortals by unleashing a calamity into their lives.
Rather than serving them their hearts desire on a silver platter, that unleashed calamity might serve to be an invaluable lesson that will be our personal arsenal for the rest of our lives. Like a person who was born into a rich family suddenly loses it all, realises he/she can't do anything not even his laundry, that "situation" would give him the opportunity to "push" himself into a life of independence and hence, should he transcend this hurdle he would have learnt a whole load of lessons and appreciate what he has, in other words he has been "blessed " with God's ( Goddess' ) gift of Strength, COurage and Independence. So... maybe we should be careful when asking God for blessings, coz we don't really know HOW those blessings might flow to us.... :)
I remember Jesus said something about not giving fish, but teaching his followers how to fish... thats somehow the idea.

The spoken blessing causes blessing powers to go into action! A cross between the Holy spirit and the angels effect the outside circumstance in front of man! And the same is true for curses, If you curse it causes the powers that effect the curse department(satan and his demons) Go into effect and when someone blesses you the angels tell those spirits to leaves you alone,(its really about spiritual warefare and Gods grace!

Wonderful things happen. You can see it all around. He can bless you with finances, relationships, and anything else. You will be able to tell when God blesses you!

"When God blesses you, what really happens?"
Depends on what physical or emotional response you get from believing. So, really, he doesn't do anything. It's all you.
"Or when you say 'God bless you' to someone, what really happens?"
Depends on if you just sneezed or not.If you did then they say "thank you" and wipe their nose.If they are saying it to be nice in a religious way then they are giving you false hope in an imaginary God and if you believe then you are making yourself feel whatever way you need to feel at that moment.
In the end, it is all about us.We make ourselves feel good or bad and we make things happen for us and so when we thank God or ask God for blessings then really what we are saying is we aren't worthy of what we do for ourselves.

There are those who claim that actual measuements can be made which reveal energetic differences between blessed and non-blessed rooms/ objects/ beings. I don't recall now who this research came from though. I believe it was the same man who discovered the morphogenic fields in plants - he was german, and somehow got incarcerated in the US in the end. His work is well-published. Good luck finding out more.
