Double, triple wrap if you must. By this I mean wrap from the bottom up, then if the hair isn't all the way up the iron yet, wrap over top of the hair already on the iron, in a steady spiralling motion.

Make sure the iron's hot enough and there is slight amount of gel or product evenly distributed on the hair. Curl evenly sectioned off pieces of hair, nothing too thick for the iron to clamp down on. Make sure it's not a little damp too.

It also won't curl very well if the water you wash with has lots of chemicals in it.

Considering the thickness and length of your hair I would first suggest that you part strands to be curled 1/4" thick by 1/2" wide, if this does not work, you want to try rolling half of the strand starting at the bottom, unroll that and roll from the middle up to the scalp to finish the strand. Hope this helps.

Try holding the curling iron verticle and/or get the hair ur wrapping around the curling iron close if not on top of each other to get closer to the top of your head. Holding the curling iron verticle might give you more of the ribbon style, but it is worth a shot.

take in Small sections/ put half hair up and half down then separte small sections again and take hair wrap it around rod 3 to 4 times then click curling iron until it gets to the ends. it will curl all of hair. then keep rolling up then touch finger tips to hair if hair is warm/ let id down and take out. finish all over head remember small sections. best demostrated in person, im a cosmatologist. this is the best way to curl ong think or wavy hair.

The iron is too small, the heat is too cool, the amount of hair is too large or you need a curling product to assist. Investigate or see a stylist for the best results.

You need to use curling rolls instead of an iron, and it helps if you put the curls in overnight.

ok. take a small amount of your hair in the clasp piece. roll it up. count to 30-40 and turn and let it loose! or get an iron designed for thicker hair

well use a hairspray first then curl it and with thick hair do it for longer also another way to curl is to use pegs and a good hairspay i no it sounds quite silly but it works
